How it works
Price before tax
Tax = amount × rate ÷ 100. Total = amount + tax. On $50 at 8%, tax is 50 × 0.08 = $4.00 and the total is $54.00. Several lines are added first, and the rate is applied to that sum.
Total already includes tax
Price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). The tax is what is left.$54.00 at 8% is 54 ÷ 1.08 = $50.00 before tax. Taking 8% off $54.00 instead gives $49.68. That is the mistake this mode is here to catch — the same one as the reverse percentage on the percentage calculator.
The rate is yours to type
A state rate is often not the rate on the receipt. Counties and cities add their own. Look up the combined rate with your state's revenue department, then type it here. There is no built-in table to go stale.
Questions
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Multiply the price by the rate and divide by 100. On $50 at 8%, the tax is $4.00 and the total is $54.00.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. A $54.00 total at 8% is $54.00 ÷ 1.08 = $50.00 before tax, so the tax inside it is $4.00. Subtracting 8% from $54.00 gives $49.68, which is wrong.
Which rate should I type?
Your combined rate depends on state, county and city. Check your state's revenue department. This calculator does not ship a rate table, because those rates change and local add-ons vary by ZIP.
Does it handle more than one line?
